What is 'global competence' and why does it matter?
Global competence is "the capacity and disposition to understand and act on issues of global significance." Today’s world is characterized by economic, cultural, technological, and environmental interconnectedness and change. To thrive in this globalized world, young people must understand the nature of the pressing issues facing current generations, and their roles as agents in responding to these challenges. From conducting an analysis of climate change to engaging in dialogue with a peer—whether from a distant country or a different neighborhood—students today need to develop the capacity to understand complex issues, take on other perspectives, communicate across differences, and take positive action in their local and global communities. |
